DeveloPassion's Newsletter #178 - Real time
Edition 178 of my newsletter, discussing Knowledge Management, Knowledge Work, Zen Productivity, Personal Organization, and more!
Welcome
Another week, another newsletter! I hope that you all had a great one 🤩
Time for a new edition of DeveloPassion's newsletter! These past week have been busy, as usual. I have a lot to tell, but little time, so let's try to make the best of it!
Alright, let's gooooo 🚀
Business
The newsletter revenue is still at the same point, which makes sense since I haven't been very active. I'd like to do more, but time is hard to catch these days!
I still have hope to convince more of you to support my work, and free up more time to focus on building and delivering valuable insights in your inbox (and elsewhere!).
Meanwhile, sales have continued crashing down, due to the lack of time I was able to dedicate to marketing & communication:
Last but not least, this week, I had to make a really tough decision. I was kindly asked to increase the time I spend working as an employee. It's clearly not what I wanted, but the ask was legitimate, and I couldn't afford to say "no" at this time. So there I am, with the business bank account still in the dark red, and less time than ever to dedicate to entrepreneurship...
It's part of the path. I'm not happy about it, but stars don't always align the way you want just because you want them too. Destiny needs a little help, and hope does not change much; only action does.
This means that I'll have to make better choices about the projects I focus on. And Knowii might again suffer from this, which is really frustrating. But the conclusion is simple: I need to do more with less. We'll see how that goes, but I'm going to do my very best, that's for sure.
The lab 🧪
My Typefully plugin for Obsidian is now available for all to use. I built it for myself, but I'm sure it will be useful to other creators. It enables publishing notes/selections in Obsidian as Typefully drafts. You can learn more about it here: https://github.com/dsebastien/obsidian-typefully
You can also install it by clicking on this link.
Knowii status update
In the past few weeks, I've made big improvements to Knowii.
I improved Web page crawling performed when new resources are added to collections, now capturing the page content, metadata, as well as thumbnails.
More importantly, I added an WebSockets API. This is a bit technical, but the idea is to enable real-time features for Knowii, which well make it possible to let users know about everything other users change (e.g., newly created communities, resource collections, resources, etc). Later on, this will also serve as the backbone for discussions and other "multiplayer" features.
This is all soon going to be available in production, but I have a few more issues to resolve first.
I've also added a first version of the community settings screen, at this point only enabling deleting communities.
Given the way I build and use the API of Knowii, everything that can be done through the user interface can also be done through the API, which means that, from the very start, Knowii will be easy to automate, and easy to integrate with other platforms.
