2026-10-02 Claude Opus 5.5 - It edited my YouTube video from A to Z
Canonical version: 2026-10-02 Claude Opus 5.5 - It edited my YouTube video from A to Z.
When Claude Opus 5.5 came out, I wrote about the price, the efficiency and the clearer writing (my launch take). Since then, I've used it for visual and creative work, and the results impressed me.
What I made with it
First, I built a lesson-creation AI skill with Opus 5.5. With it, I created visuals, animations, videos, games and quizzes. That goes much further than text with a few bullet points.
At my day job, I experimented with explainer videos for AI concepts. Those concepts are hard to get across with words alone, so they were a good test case.
I also let Opus 5.5 edit one of my YouTube videos from A to Z: the cuts, the intro, the outro, the callouts, my head framed in a circle overlay, and the transitions.
Here's the result:
The Hacker News thread on explainer videos
A Hacker News thread titled "Opus 5.5 is good at explainer videos" reached 429 points and 223 comments.
It's about launchvideo.io. Opus 5.5 writes JavaScript code with Remotion (a framework that turns React code into videos), and that code renders animated explainer videos with voiceovers. The product orchestrates several models through OpenRouter, for about $3-4 per video. Most renders come out right in one shot, with minimal iteration.
The comments praised its design "taste" and its grasp of architecture. People got good output even from underspecified prompts, saw a clear use for explaining complex systems internally, and a few said their "jaw literally dropped".
Criticisms from the thread
Commenters also raised criticisms, and I think they have a point:
- Jobs: animators and other creatives are directly exposed
- Noise: cheaper production means even more low-effort content in everyone's feeds
- Thin products: when the model does the hard part, LLM-wrapper startups get commoditized fast
- Trust and cost: doubts about how genuine AI-made content feels, plus the environmental footprint
I agree with the more nuanced replies: the quality of the result still depends on human taste. And making this kind of production accessible to people without an animation budget has legit uses: teachers, small creators, teams explaining their own systems to each other.
My take
I spend my days explaining things: in articles, videos, courses, and at work. Producing the visuals is usually the slow, expensive part. Opus 5.5 shrinks it a lot.
That doesn't make the content good by itself. You still need something worth explaining, and the judgment to cut what's just filler. But if you teach, write documentation or explain systems to colleagues, try it on one small piece: a quiz, an animation, a short explainer video. You'll be surprised.
The full breakdown of the model (pricing, benchmarks, API changes, safeguards) is in my Claude Opus 5.5 note.
That's it for today! ✨
