2026-09-28 Obsidian Starter Kit 5.0.1 fixes empty daily notes
Canonical version: 2026-09-28 Obsidian Starter Kit 5.0.1 fixes empty daily notes.
Hey everyone!
I just shipped Obsidian Starter Kit 5.0.1. After v5.0.0 went out on September 25, some of you told me that the daily note template wasn't always applied. You were right, and the cause was a change in Templater.
What went wrong
On a fresh v5.0.0 vault:
- A daily note opened from a link (the ◀ ▶ buttons, the week breadcrumb, a date link) came out EMPTY
- Daily notes created with the Periodic Notes commands contained raw Templater code, like
<% tp.date.now() %> - Any new note created from the file explorer or from a link stayed blank: no note type picker, and it wasn't filed
Meanwhile, the Journal Bases buttons and commands kept working. That's why it looked random.
Why it happened
Every OSK template relies on one Templater setting: "Trigger Templater on new file creation". v5.0.0 shipped with it turned on in Templater's data.json.
The thing is, since Templater 2.25, Templater no longer reads that setting from data.json. For security reasons, it now stores it per device in local storage (along with "Enable system commands" and startup templates), and it's OFF by default. If you had it on when Templater updated, you got a notice saying it had been reset and asking you to turn it back on, which was easy to dismiss. A fresh v5.0.0 vault got no notice at all.
My own vault worked fine, because the setting was already on for my machine. So my testing didn't catch it. A plugin update silently moved a setting out of the vault, and I missed it.
The 30-second fix (no download needed)
If you're on 5.0.0, go to Settings → Community plugins → Templater and turn on "Trigger Templater on new file creation".
Do it on EACH device. The setting lives on the device, so syncing your vault won't carry it over.
Notes created while it was off won't fix themselves:
- Empty ones: delete them and create them again
- Ones with content: use ↻ Retype with the same type, then remove any leftover tags
What 5.0.1 changes
The OSK plugin now checks that setting every time Obsidian starts. If Templater is enabled and the trigger is off on your device, a dialog explains why it matters and offers three choices: Enable, Not now, or Don't ask again.
It never changes the setting without your click, since Templater treats it as a security setting. Once you click Enable, it works right away (no restart needed).
The check has its own setting, "Check the Templater file creation trigger" (Settings → Obsidian Starter Kit → Obsidian integration, on by default). You can also run it any time with the "Obsidian Starter Kit: Check Templater file creation trigger" command.
5.0.1 also bundles the latest versions of 16 community plugins, including these changes:
- Kanban Action Planner can archive every card of a done column from the column header
- reMarkable Sync detects notebooks edited after the first sync again, and no longer re-downloads everything after a failed listing
- The REST and MCP server never listens beyond localhost without an API key
Templates, scripts, note types, bases, AI skills and plugin settings files are unchanged. It still requires Obsidian 1.13.7 or newer.
