Codex Micro

Canonical version: Codex Micro.

Codex Micro is a $230 macro pad from OpenAI's Supply Co., made with Work Louder and announced on 15 July 2026. It is a physical control surface for OpenAI Codex: thirteen mechanical keys, a rotary dial, a planar joystick, and per-key RGB that reflects live agent status.

It is a keyboard accessory, not a model release. Worth a note anyway, because of what it says about how agentic work is changing the desk.

What it actually does

• Agent keys with live RGB: each key shows a Codex status colour, so you can see what is thinking, running, waiting, or done without switching chats
• Joystick flick launches skills: review a PR, debug an error, refactor
• Command keys for the actions you hit constantly: accept, reject, push-to-talk, new chat
• Rotary dial sets reasoning effort, turned up or down in the moment
• Bluetooth / USB-C, Mac and Windows, CNC aluminium and PC, 32 custom icon keycaps included

The interesting part

Strip away the hardware and the dial is the argument. Reasoning effort has become a thing you adjust continuously enough to deserve a knob. That is a real change in how people work with agents, and it is the same shift visible in Claude Fable 5's effort parameter and Gemini's Low/Medium/High variants. Effort is now a dial, not a model choice.

The status lights point at the other half of it. Running several agents at once creates a monitoring problem that nobody had two years ago, and "which of my four agents is blocked on me right now" is a genuinely awkward question to answer by alt-tabbing. Whether the answer is a $230 macro pad is a separate question.

The obvious objections

They were made immediately and most of them land.

• It is a rebranded Work Louder Creator Micro 2, not custom hardware. Work Louder is the Teenage Engineering of keyboards: nice objects, enthusiast pricing
• An Elgato Stream Deck costs less and puts a screen on every key. There is a community-made Claude Code usage plugin for it already
• A $39 Epomaker EK21 does the same job with 20 keys. A printable FOSS option exists
• It is not clear why a physical object beats a window on your screen, given the window is free
• Out of stock at announcement, which reads more like a production capability test than a product line

The kindest honest reading: OpenAI testing hardware supply chains on something low-risk, wrapped in a fun object for people who buy fun objects.

Why it matters

Not for the pad. For the pattern: the interface to agentic work is being actively redesigned, and multiple people are converging on the same three needs. See what every agent is doing. Approve or reject fast. Adjust how hard the model thinks. Those needs are real whether you satisfy them with a macro pad, a Stream Deck, a MIDI controller, or a better terminal UI.

Solve them in software before spending $230 on solving them in aluminium.
