The way we learn and perceive software development is changing a lot due to the rapid evolution of AI capabilities.

And many people feel like nothing matters anymore. There's a thread on Hacker News that captures the mood perfectly, titled "Does anyone else feel like nothing matters anymore?". New software releases? Who cares. Learning new CS concepts? Whatever. That side project? Just one more addition to the mountain of slop. It's sitting at 272 points with 78 comments, so clearly a LOT of developers feel the same way.

I don't. Really, I don't.

Personally, I feel like knowing about and understanding IT concepts actually matters more than ever. Why? Because it makes a big difference when you know exactly what to ask for, what to verify, etc. When you don't, you're fully depending on the AI slot machine. You might get a 7-7-7, or you might get a big pile of mud. And you won't even be able to tell which one you got.

We don't know what the next generations of AI models will be capable of. One thing is for sure though: they'll keep getting better. But I think we're still quite far from a point where AI "thinks" about everything, doesn't leave unused or ugly code lying around, etc.

Even if some might feel like our job as software engineers has lost its whole meaning, I don't think that's the case just yet. AI is getting better and better each week, but it doesn't actually think or feel anything. It's still just a glorified text generator. And we're still the ones responsible for the code we deliver to our customers.

That part hasn't moved an inch. We're still responsible for building great software, and we must continue to care deeply. And for that, mastering concepts remains a must.
