2026-10-23 Kanban Action Planner 2.8 - Track time from a hotkey and filter by property
Canonical version: 2026-10-23 Kanban Action Planner 2.8 - Track time from a hotkey and filter by property.
I've released two updates of the Kanban Action Planner plugin for Obsidian today: 2.7.1 and 2.8.0. The big one is 2.8.0: time tracking you can start without opening a board, new ways to filter your cards, and new cards that show up the moment you create them. 2.7.1 is a cleanup release; nothing changes for you.
Why time tracking needed shortcuts
Until now, a time-tracking session started from a card. Open the board, find the card, open its menu, start the session. That's fine when the board is already in front of you. When you're working in a note and just want the clock to run, it's too many steps.
Andre2023-S asked for a faster way on GitHub (issue #228), with hotkeys to start or switch a session. So 2.8.0 adds three ways to do it without the board, and you can bind each one to a hotkey.
Time-tracking shortcuts
- Start time tracking on the active note starts a session on the note you're looking at.
- Switch time tracking to… opens a note picker. The notes you tracked recently come first, then the ones you opened recently.
- Per-note shortcuts. Pick Add time-tracking shortcut in a card's menu, and the plugin registers a Start time tracking:command for that note. Give it a hotkey and you're done. The hotkey survives renames, moves and archiving.
Switching stops and records the running session first, exactly like the card menu does. And a side fix: a session no longer gets lost when its note is renamed or archived while the clock is running.
New cards show up at once
When you create a card from the board, it now appears right away as a faded placeholder in its column, and turns into the real card once the Base catches up. Before, nothing showed until Obsidian had indexed the note. On a big vault, that can take a while.
If the view's filters leave the new note out, the placeholder goes away and a notice offers to open the note. So the card never just vanishes.
Quick capture on an empty board
A board with no columns and no notes now offers Add card. The dialog asks for the status and can save it as the board's first column.
Also fixed: on a board whose columns are defined but which has no notes yet, a new card's status wasn't written.
Date-window chips
Next to the filter box, you now get Today, Next 7 days and Next 30 days chips (you can change them in the settings). A chip keeps the cards due or scheduled in that window.
Under the hood, a chip writes a when: term into the filter. It combines with whatever you type, and it's saved with the view. All date filters now accept rolling windows too, like due:next7d or scheduled:next2w.
Filter by property
A new toolbar button lists the properties your note types give a fixed set of values: necessity, urgency, effort and so on, whether they come from the Obsidian Starter Kit or from the plugin's note type settings. Pick a property, tick the values you want, and only the matching cards stay on the board.
On a board that mixes note types, each property shows which types define it. Your picks become a regular filter term, like necessity:="20 - SHOULD".
And := now ignores sort prefixes: necessity:=should finds 20 - SHOULD. Much less typing!
Reviews outside triage
Reviews are no longer limited to triage. There are two new filters, review:due and review:never, and a Review badge on the cards that are due for review. The badge is on by default; the setting is Show the review badge.
On a board, a note takes part in reviews once it has a last-reviewed date or its own review interval.
Other changes
- 2.7.1: the plugin's rating on the new Obsidian community directory scorecard went from "Caution" to "Satisfactory" (66 issues down to 4). The CSS no longer needs
!importantor:has, and two dependency advisories are fixed. You won't see any difference. - User guide: it was reviewed end to end against the plugin and corrected. It also has a new section on filtering boards that mix note types.
- What's next: two follow-ups are filed. Comparisons on any property, like
review_count:<3(#229), and type-ahead suggestions in the filter box (#230).
Thanks, Andre2023-S
The time-tracking shortcuts exist because Andre2023-S took the time to open issue #228. They wrote it in Spanish and translated it before posting. ¡Muchas gracias! 🙏
